The Day of VP Shunt Surgery; Florida South Hospital

I wish had gotten this surgery years ago. This pressure that I’ve had for such a long time, now it’s gone. I’ve had three rounds of antibiotics as a safety precaution so I don’t get an infection. I’m really glad that everyone here has been so nice to me. There are a few things that I would like to go over for anyone have future surgery that is a VP- Shunt and having this procedure done at Orlando South Florida Hospital: Neurology of Orlando Medicine.

All of the staff here have been super friendly. The morning of surgery, be at the Hospital Gibson Surgical Services wing, 3rd flood by five AM. If arriving an hour or so early, the earlier you will be taken in the back, if your desire. It was a two and a half hour drive to the hospital from the house to Florida South Hospital in Orlando, Florida.

Do you wake up in pain?

There is some initial pain from the surgery but overall it’s just soreness. This VP Shunt surgery took away my vision and pain problems. Whenever I have a spinal tap done, as soon as they start to drain the fluid it is literally just like a smoke screen, it cleared right up. My only main issue from surgery was having to be put on an oxygen mask.

Expect to stay a few nights

After asking if I go home after the first night, they first told me, yes, it wouldn’t be a problem depending on how I was feeling and if Dr. Ghandi felt I needed to stay. I was told to stop asking, I’m just so excited that I can see and the head pain is gone!!!!! The exhilaration alone, from not being in this type of pain is an award winner alone in my book. I am proud of myself for having gone through the surgery, even though the shunts, like most plumbing, get clogged and needed to be adjusted.

Friendly Staff

Out of the hospitals and staff members that I have met, Florida South Hospital in Orlando is the friendliest, informative, peaceful, and happiest hospital I have ever been to in my life. I would like to thank Florida South Hospital for taking such excellent care of me. Any questions that I may or may not have had, they’ve answered it or found the correct answer for me.

Pre-op Testing (Blood Work)

Just an F.Y.I. for those who have blood work written on their paperwork. It will take approximately, two hours to get you pre-registered, blood drawn for surgery, and finally talk to a certified nurse and/or doctor who inform you of your pre-surgery showers, type of procedure and ask you some basic questions.

I am so happy that I have my sight back and I won’t have to worry about it for a long time now. Thank you so much, Dr. Ghandi for your excellent work and services for taking such great care of me. I will be recommending you to others with the highest of satisfaction.
